Illinois Department of Corrections allows inmates to visit their loved ones in person. It gives them emotional support and helps keep their connection with the outside world strong. To navigate the visitation process, follow these guidelines:

  • Identify the person you would like to visit and their facility by utilizing the search tool.
  • Ensure you are on the incarcerated individual’s approved visitation list by writing them a letter. IDOC staff cannot verify whether you are on the individual’s list.
  • Schedule your visit online.
  • The signup system will timeout if there is no activity for 30 minutes. If you start to sign up, you must complete the sign-up within 30 minutes.
  • Arrive at the facility at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled visit time.

IDOC Inmate Phone Calls

People in jail can’t get regular phone calls, but they can make collect calls to those on their approved list. If you want to get these calls, You need to write a letter to the person in jail and ask to add to their approved calling list.

Inmates have specific times when they can make calls, Based on their living unit’s schedule. It’s important to know that all calls made by inmates can be listened to and recorded by jail staff, except for special unmonitored calls with attorneys, Which need permission from IDOC legal staff.

Using or starting three-way calls is not allow and can lead to trouble according to jail rules.

The Illinois Department of Corrections uses Securus (1-800-844-6591) as the only provider of phone services for inmates.

IDOC Inmate Electronic Messaging Service

The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) offers an Electronic Messaging Service, allowing friends and family members to communicate with inmates using an electronic messaging system.

Messages can be created and sent through Global Tel* Link’s (GTL) ConnectNetwork.com and will be printed and delivered to the inmates, similar to regular mail. The messages are subject to review and will be printed and delivered through the IDOC’s regular mail delivery process after the review is complete.

Sending Money to Inmates

To make sure inmates can cover expenses for things like commissary items, medical emergencies, and phone calls, You can send them money using the following methods:

Electronic Payments

To send money electronically, use the inmate’s IDOC number and last name. If you’re using GTL, JPAY, or Western Union, the money should show up in the inmate’s account within 24-48 hours.

If you use Money Gram, it might take a bit longer – around 72-96 business hours. But if the inmate is moving between facilities, it could take more than 24-96 business hours.

Money Orders

People in custody can get money orders, but each one shouldn’t be more than $999.99. When you send a money order, include a deposit slip with the inmate’s name, IDOC number, your name, and address.

You can get deposit slips at the facility or online. Make the money order payable to JPay and send it, along with the deposit slip, to:
